Wrought Iron Beds
CHOOSING WROUGHT IRON
Given its limited availability and high price compared to Mild Steel, Wrought Iron is not always the first or right choice for all metalwork projects. Wrought Iron is ideally suited for external and traditionally forged work and although a number of blacksmiths and commissioners utilise these properties in new work, its prime use today is in the restoration and conservation of historic ironwork.
It seems that wrought iron will never go out of style, the quality that wrought iron has, and the sheer professionalism that is required to master the art of shaping iron onto different patterns and shapes will always be appreciated by almost everyone.
These days most of the people who are in the market for wrought iron are looking for something from the romantic period, something to remind them of a time where things were a little more simpler, and in fact a time when everything that was made was unique and special, when people needed to order exactly what they wanted and than wait quite a while till they got the piece that they dreamed off.
From all the things that can be and in fact are being made out of wrought iron there are a few that are especially indicative of the romantic era, the wrought iron bed with its uniqueness and heavy presence in the bedroom is one of those items. Victorian homemakers who were concerned about cleanness had a preference for iron over wood which made their cleaning tasks a little easier.
Perhaps no other piece of furniture so well captures the romance of days gone by as the wrought iron bed. Victorian homemakers, newly-obsessed with germs and cleanliness, preferred the them over beds with a wood frame because the iron’s hard, non-porous surfaces made cleaning and disinfecting easier than ever before. Modern parents searching for an alternative to plastic love the wrought iron for the same reason.
Cleanliness is far from the only reason to love a wrought iron bed, however. Their sleek lines, elegant curves, and sometimes elaborate designs evoke a feeling of nostalgia and timelessness. Who hasn’t been charmed by wrought iron’s elegance in the bedroom? Pile the bed with silk, satin, or down, and the result is nothing short of sensuous.
However, the wrought iron bed is at its best in the young girl’s room. Sturdy enough to hold a gaggle of giggling girls for a slumber party, it is nevertheless lovely enough to appeal to a girl’s sense of beauty and romance. Lace and frills go naturally with wrought iron. And, like the Victorian ladies of old, modern women will appreciate the ease with which the iron rails are cleansed of sticky fingerprints!
